Unpaid Rent Collection from Former Tenants is Now Easier

If you are a landlord and your tenant has moved out on or after September 1, 2021, the Landlord and Tenant Board has made it simpler for you to collect money from a former tenant. Recent changes to the Residential Tenancies Act, 2006, Landlords may be able to apply directly to the Board to: collect rent or compensation that they believe a former tenant owes them, collect an amount for charges related to NSF cheques, collect costs from unpaid utility bills, collect costs from damage to the rental unit or costs incurred due to a former tenant or other visitor substantially interfering with their reasonable enjoyment or lawful right, privilege, or interest. This issue has become especially prominent for landlords during the Pandemic.
